CLIL Packs

Our unit is the perfect introduction to CLIL for both teachers and students and has been designed for flexible implementation.

Languages Roadshow has developed fully resourced units of work on the topic of school in the target language country. The resources have been written for Japanese, Italian, Spanish and French and we are looking at expanding the range to include more languages. The unit takes a ‘self-contained’ approach to CLIL in that the ‘content’ in this case is cultural information about school in Japan, Spain, France or Italy (as opposed to taking content from another subject area like Science or Geography). We have taken this approach to allow teachers to become more confident with CLIL pedagogy and to remove as many barriers as possible for you to try this out with your students.

Why you need these resources at your school

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) offers a solution to many of the challenges we face as Languages educators. When we integrate meaningful content with explicit language teaching, we give our students the best chance at acquiring language and we maximise our student engagement. CLIL allows us as teachers to bring topics to our Languages classes that truly interest and motivate our students. The evidence is clear – CLIL works and it is flexible enough to work in any number of contexts.

CLIL is the method of Languages instruction in many parts of the world (in fact, it is the mandated approach in Italy). CLIL is also gaining momentum in predominantly English-speaking countries like Australia, the USA and the UK because of motivated educators like yourself who can see that something must change if we are going to turn the tide on the decreasing interest in Languages in our schools.

HOWEVER (and it is a big however), the unavoidable challenge of CLIL itself is how time-consuming it is for teachers to write and resource a CLIL program.  In Europe and Asia, CLIL is predominantly used for teaching English, which means most of the resources that are available online or commercially are not written for Japanese, French, Italian or Spanish (or any other Language you are teaching). One of the key premises of CLIL is that language use is meticulously planned for and this means there is a significant time investment in creating a single lesson, let alone an entire unit of work. Basically, you need to start from scratch – and I know from experience it’s an awful lot of work.

As a teacher who has single-handedly created a year-long CLIL program from scratch, I know how much work went into it and I know it’s not feasible in most situations. At the time I created my Japanese CLIL program, I did not have kids (so I had more time on my hands) and most importantly, I had access to a grant that allowed me to ‘buy’ myself release time from class to work on the program. I couldn’t have done it without that time because there were absolutely no resources available for me to draw on.

The program was a huge success in terms of student engagement and proficiency and I wanted to help other teachers enjoy that success. That’s why these packs exist. The other members of the writing team had similar experiences and that’s why we have created the resource pack we wish we’d had when we were starting out with CLIL.

What you’ll get

We have developed EVERYTHING you’ll need to teach this unit. You WILL NOT need to:

  • write an assessment piece
  • create a unit plan
  • match to the Australian Curriculum
  • create powerpoints for lessons
  • create any worksheets
  • script your teacher talk in the target language

ALL of that is already done for you.

Imagine what you’ll be able to do with all that time! Our pack will allow you to get started on planning something else for later in the year and in the meantime, enjoy being in class and watching the students learn, with so much of the work done for you. It also might mean you’ll get a few weekends free where you won’t have much planning to do.

For CLIL programs to succeed, teachers need a strong understanding of CLIL pedagogy. We have that covered, too.

All members of your Languages team will have access to our online CLIL training program, where they can access up to 8 hours of professional learning.
